Sikkim – Where Nature Smiles

My travel experience of Sikkim was quite mesmerizing serene. The more I explored the places and culture the more I fell in love with this state. Born in Northeast India myself, there is very special connection felt within every time I visit this part of the country. Truly said and absolutely perfect tag line given by the India Tourism. “NorthEast – A Paradise Unexplored”

IMG_1809

Sikkim has been given many names. The Lepchas, original inhabitants of the land called it Nye-mae-el `paradise’. The Limbus named it Su Khim or `new house’ while to the Bhutias it was Beymul Demazong `the hidden valley of rice’

The panoramic perfection of the snow-capped Himalayas, the heady scent of flower-bedecked meadows, the vibrant culture and joyous festivals, the infinite variety of its flora and fauna makes it a holiday that is at once fascinating and challenging.

My Journey To Gangtok-

Took a flight from Delhi to ‘Bagdogra Airport’ in West Bengal. From there its a 5 hours [124kms] journey by road via NH10 enjoying the scenic beauty all through out the way as it passes by the river “Tista” and crossing places like Siliguri, Mangpu, Kalimpong, Rangpo and Rangpool.

Wanna save some time? You can take a helicopter ride from the Bagdogra Airport to reach Gangtok easily and comfortably. The helicopter service (known as Pawan Hans) is provided by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC) which is a division of Sikkim State Govt. Timings – 10 AM to 5 PM

Sight scene

Ban Jhakri Waterfall **  The 100-foot waterfall of Ban Jhakri is located near Gangtok. The park’s statuary and other displays document the Ban Jhakri, or traditional shamanic healer who worships spirits living in caves around the falls. Ban means “forest”, and jhakri means “healer”. Though it is just a tourist destination now, it is believed that hundreds of years ago the native people use to bring the ill members of the family to this place to heal. A priest community called jhakri [healer] would preform few rituals worshiping spirits living in the caves around the falls to cure the illness. Specifically at midnight. The family of the ill person would present ginger, fresh water, herbs, turmeric and a cock as offering to the spirits.

Tashi View Point **  [Bojoghori Village] This view point will keep you spellbound with its natural beauty. Apart from the beautiful hills and valleys of Gangtok, this view post will mesmerise you with by giving a spectacular look of the “Kanchenjunga Mountains” The crowning glory of Sikkim is Mt. Khangchendzonga, the third highest mountain in the world. With magnificent snow and ice scenery it is often regarded as the undisputed monarch among the peaks of the world.

DSCN0977

But for the Sikkimese Khangchendzonga is much more than a mountain and is revered as the abode of their guardian deity Dzo-nga. Even today the mountain god is invoked and prayed to during Pang Lhabsol, a major Sikkimese festival, which also commemorates the blood brotherhood sworn between the Lepchas and the Bhutias at Kabi in the fifteenth century. The sacred mountain can be viewed from every corner of Sikkim.

Ganesh Tok **   Close to Tashi View point is Ganesh Tok, a temple of Lord Gansha. It’s located at an altitude of 6,500 ft. It is one of the most famous Lord Ganesh temple in Gangtok. This small temple can accommodate only few persons at a time.

DSCN0991

DSCN0990

Plant Observatory **  There are various species of plants for observation. For. tourist this place is just for recreation purpose and for some perfect selfies. For a botanist, this place is heavenly. A very refreshing place with different plant species. Specially known for preservation of rhododendrons.

Sikkimese Cuisine

Momos ** Here comes the hometown  of our beloved “Momos” Yes! those sinful and indulging dumplings which we can’t live without. These guys are available in almost every corner in India and making all go gaga behind them. “Momos are most commonly available food in Sikkim. From roadside shacks to the most expensive restaurants, you will find Momos on every menu. Hot steamed flour dumplings filled with minced meat, cheese or vegetable, accompanied by home made chilli sauce and piping hot soup.

DSCN0985

Thukpa **  Another popular and easily available item is the Thukpa or Gya-thuk, a typical Tibetan style noodles in soup, based with vegetables or meat.

Saelroti ** The Nepalese prepare a special kind of bread, mostly during festivals called the Saelroti. This is prepared from fermented rice batter which is deep fried in a ring shape and eaten with potato curry or meat or simply by itself.

Fermented food ** In fact, is an important element of many Sikkimese dishes. Like Chhurpi, Kinema and Bamboo Shoot.

But my best experience of having a wholesome and home made meal was at “Aunty Lalmaya’s Kitchen. The cafe is next to “Ganesh Tok” She is running this small cafe since ages and serving home made food cooked all by herself to locals and tourists. She feeds more then 100 people a day. During peak season the count goes upto 200 to 300 customers a day.

People

The People of Sikkim consist of three ethnic groups, that is, Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali. Sikkimese Nepali are mostly Buddhist comprising of cast like “Lepcha” and “Bhutia”. They are also  considered to be the upper class caste. Rest comprises of cast like “Rai” “Limbu” “Mukhia” etc. They are mostly Nepali Hindus.

** Raasleela ** By Sonali R. Agarwal

18260683_10206907838893862_222503312_o

Raasleela was founded in 2015 by Sonali R. Agarwal, an alumni of Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi.

From the designer-

” Raasleela was founded out of my love for Indian fabrics and my innate need to quirk it up. It was founded for my need to wear modern clothing in breathable fabrics and the huge lapse in Indian market of making such product. It was also founded to take the traditional Indian crafts and put it on the map.

I would love for all the women to get up, take notice of our rich heritage and wear it proudly”

Lets get up close and personal as the designer talks about the Lebel

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_15a

# How did it all started? And about the label?

** Raasleela, is a metaphor for playful and happy clothing. It was started for the modern woman, who is fun, experimental and confident. For the woman, who is rooted in her personal values and liberal in her thoughts.

The label at its soul, if full of love for all things Desi . We try to do our part in promoting traditional crafts of India and work directly with printers and weavers, so they get fair wages. You will always find an Indian craft highlighting in all our clothing.
Our design philosophy revolves around the idea of minimalism, clean cuts and relaxed silhouettes, in pure fabrics.
We believe in all things handmade and handcrafted. We do limited pieces as they are not produced by machines, in bulk.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_159

# Inspiration behind it?

** Modern Indian Woman- embracing tradition with individuality.

# What trends are followed by label?

** We do not follow any trends- we make classic clothes with modern twist in quality fabric- which will last a few years, sustainable in both quality and trends. However we do follow color forecasts.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_158

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_15b

# How frequently the collection is re-vamped?

** We come up with a new collection every 2-3 months.

 # What is the signature style?

** Comfortable, classic, modern. We are making our native fabric/ crafts are own again.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_157

Does the collection retains the Indian flavor?

** Absolutely. We use only native fabrics/ textiles and crafts. Each collection will have atleast one Indian element, if not more, in terms of fabric/ embroidery/ prints etc.

# What all market is covered by the label. (eg boutique/online)

** We have a physical studio in Delhi and we are expanding extensively online. Raasleela has its own website and we are also retailing through major e-portals.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_156

# Apart from an outlet, is the label goes on tour? (events and exhibitions)

** Yes, we do take parts in exhibitions, once or twice in an year.

# What kind of clients does the label cover. What kind of audience is targeted? Major client group like age or budget.

** Our audience is modern indian woman- somebody who likes to retain our culture and wear it proudly in a modern, fun setting. Our clothes are also extremely comfortable to be in since we use ZERO synthetic fabrics or dyes. Age group is primarily between 27- 60 years. Price starts from 2500/-

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_155

# What is the next collection or launch by the label?

**We are hoping to launch our festive collection by May2017 and we are also launching an adorable little girls clothing very soon.- Raasleela Tiny

What is your take on fashion meets technology? Online market and all.

**Online market is our present and future- we are expanding majorly into digital sale and extensively doing social media marketing. Its a very powerful medium and also an essential one to reach all your target audience throughout the country, and the world. Raasleela ships internationally.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_154

# What is your take on changing trends and globalization of Indian Fashion.

** Although we do not believe in changing trends, we do keep an eye out for any new and exciting designs happening. Fashion is an industry where you have to keep reinventing yourself and watching our contemporaries and seniors is a fantastic way to learn and appreciate the new.

Its fantastic to see so many Indian designers taking global fashion scene by storm- and even better to see how they retain our beautiful culture and its complexities in their designs.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_153

# What is your go to outfit on a normal day?

** A cotton maxi or my current favorite- shirt dresses

# What will be your personal style be? Your favorite look?

** Minimal and comfortable, a cotton kurta with loose pants

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_15f

# Dressing tips for this summer-

** Invest in fine quality cotton pieces, they will make summers much easier. Its a myth that cotton should be cheap and shiny looking fabrics are acceptable if expensive. Wear fun, loose kurtas and dresses, team them up with scarves to jazz up the outfit and wear them up with kohlapuris and a smile

** SANA-DI-GE ** A Coastal Cuisine Delight

image17

It was a random plan to visit this place with one of my friend. We both share a common weakness which is for costal cuisine and sea food.

Sana-Di-Ge in Tulu refers to the brass lamp lit on auspicious occasions in the coastal belt of Karnataka. It is a coastal speciality fine dine restaurant with splendid ambiance and serving wide varieties of Coastal Cuisine.

image5

The menu is eclectic blend of coastal cuisine, North Indian Cuisine and Chinese Cuisine.

My Love for this place is little personal as it took me back to my fond memories of years I stayed in Goa. Fresh Fish, Beaches and Sand, Coconut Curry, Local Market and their fresh produce. ** THE CHATTER HOUSE **

Nehru Place, South Delhi is the current go to destination for lip smacking food and high on night life for many. “The Chatter House” can be added to the list of happening places over there. I happen to hop into the place on a week day which was Wednesday to de-stress from the Monday blues and Tuesday madness, and to my surprise it was a “Pink Privilege Nights” exclusive ladies night with awesome drinks on the the house. On entering the place it gives a unique country side pub feel with wooden work and chandeliers. Gave a great vive and the live music was just prefect enough for me to set my mood. The singer started off with few of my favourite numbers and it didn’t ended there. I knew that the night has just started and I am going to have a great time. Great ambience and energetic staff.

Most exciting part of the show for me was the “FASHION SHUTTLE” It was a great opportunity for people attending the show to bring out the hidden talent getting dressed in designer clothing and get a photo session done. I throughly took advantage of the fashion shuttle and got a photo session done.

SUPRACHI’S clothes were stunning, technically lofty fabrications and ladylike sophistication. It was pretty thrilling to see the designer delve into silhouettes which were dramatic, bold and yet filled with feminine grace. The pastel palette of light and airy colors makes this collection easy to wear and subtle on the eyes. It makes it hard not to stop and admire the beauty of this very desirable collection.

ANSHITA GARG’S spring summer collection aims at comfort and chic clothing. The collection exhibits the use of zari and bead work in western clothing along with light weight fabric like linen satin and maheshwari silk.

POOJA PESHOIA’S  collection was Inspired by the natural reflections which illuminate the ocean’s surface, Designed for the determined woman of today there was a blend of forward modernity yet rooted with traditional elegance and detailing. With the collection, he raised the message of “Help Egypt Help an Heritage”.  Egypt is famous for its ancient civilizations and also some of the earliest and most famous monuments of the world but it’s facing many grâve problems. “the issue which struck his attention was “taharrush gamea.” which means “group harassment” in Arabic, “sexual assault by a bunch of Arab men” or “gang-rape game” and that it’s a normal thing in the Arab World. Also named “a circle of hell” More than 99 percent of women and girls in Egypt interviewed for a survey published by UN Women in 2013 reported that they had experienced some form of sexual harassment.
